Galaxy phones dealing with more battery woes, but this time it isn’t Samsung’s fault

The last thing Samsung needs is more complaints about batteries, so reports the updated Oculus app is killing the life-force of Galaxy phones will be about as welcome as a bacon and egg butty at a vegan brunch.

The Oculus and Reddit forums are awash with Galaxy S6, S6 Edge, S7 and S7 Edge owners who say the Oculus app is hammering the battery.

According to the reports the app is putting unnecessarily high strain on the CPU, even with the app just running in the background.

One affected user emailed Gizmodo to say: “A background update for Oculus caused my S7 to chew through the battery, keeping it warm all day yesterday and creating major a lag.

“Randomly tried to use the Gear VR last night, and it prompted for another updated that wouldn’t install.”

The Oculus app is, of course necessary to make use of the Samsung Gear VR, which is designed specifically for use with newer Galaxy handsets.

The recent issues with the Note 7 batteries overheating caused Oculus, who designed the Gear VR in collaboration with Samsung, to send a warning to all Note 7 owners, not to use it with the headset.

Oculus and Samsung are yet to comment on the issue, but we’ll keep you posted.
