What is Black Friday?

Put simply, Black Friday is one of the most important shopping days of the year. It's become so popular that it now takes over a whole week, though theoretically it still comes down to one day, and that's traditionally the day after Thanksgiving in the US. That means this year Black Friday is on 25th November 2016.

Since the early 1930s, this has been viewed as the start of the Christmas shopping season for our American cousins, kicking off extensive promotional sales.

These days, it's when retailers price-drop many of their goods, causing a pre-Christmas rush of epic proportions. Like fast food and dodgy grammar, Black Friday has now bled into the UK from the US. Several UK retailers – online and on the high street – now offer sales worth checking out.

So, drop everything you're doing and bookmark this page for all the best deals in the build up to Black Friday, and on the big day itself. Loads of UK retailers are taking part, you're bound to pick up a bargain.

Here's what to expect from a number of the UK's top retailers.

Black Friday 2016: Best deals to expect from Amazon UK

Amazon goes big on Black Friday, however hard it tries to convince you that really it's all about its own Amazon Prime Day.

Those who have signed up to the company’s premium service, Amazon Prime, will get early access to 30,000 Lightning Amazon Black Friday deals before they are made available to other shoppers.

Amazon has already revealed details of its Black Friday Sale 2016, confirming that there’ll be 12 days of mega deals here in the UK. It’s set to kick off on November 14, and run all the way through until Black Friday – and then onwards over until Cyber Monday.

It’s the longest Black Friday sale Amazon has ever held, with the retailer promising that “millions of pounds” of deals will be on offer, including plenty of special discounts from Prime members.

Keep an eye out on HD TVs, phones, audio kit, toys, and home accessories, for some of the biggest deals.

Amazon offers new deals every hour throughout the Black Friday week, starting on Monday. These offers cover the full spectrum of what Amazon has to offer, which is pretty much everything.

In the past you’ve been able to get great deals on electronic goods such as laptops, consoles, cameras, smartphones, and the like – one thing that's virtually guaranteed is that Amazon will price slash its own-brand Fire and Kindle products significantly on the day.

You’ll need to be quick, though, as all the best deals sell out very quickly. As always, we recommend that you stick around at least 15 minutes after the deal starts. Many people who put products in their basket as soon as the deal starts then leave them to time out after 15 minutes, making deals that previously appeared ‘sold out’ available once more.

Black Friday 2016: Best deals to expect from Argos

All of the UK's big electronics retailers come out to play on Black Friday, but a few are particularly worth paying attention to.

One such retailer is the ever reliable Argos, who will let you sign up for deals notifications ahead of Black Friday.

Related: Argos Black Friday deals

Argos is known for its great bargains throughout the year, and Argos should be going all-out for Black Friday 2016. The deals are already starting to flood in as well, though the best early deals may well be saved for Black Friday weeks, which kicks off on November 21. Check out our Argos Black Friday deals page for the best deals so far.

Expect a wide range of tempting deals for Argos, covering everything from phones to games consoles and kitchen gear, but in our opinion, the big ticket item this year is going to be 4K TVs.

Black Friday 2016: Best deals to expect from John Lewis

John Lewis is a staple British retailer that you can always rely on for great deals and great customer service. There are loads of retailers worth keeping tabs on, but upmarket outlet John Lewis is one you can't afford to forget.

The bespoke High Street department store is going to offer a bunch of great deals, and will be peddling discounted goods from Thursday, November 24, right through to Cyber Monday on November 28.

The retailer has also committed to extending its 'Never Knowingly Undersold' price-matching promise to Black Friday. So if you see a great bargain elsewhere, but you want to stay loyal to John Lewis, you'll be able to enjoy the exact same discount.

If you want some early deals, check out our John Lewis Black Friday deals page.

And to whet your appetite for the spending season, here's the John Lewis Christmas ad:

Black Friday 2016: Best deals to expect from Currys

The biggest deals day of the year is nearly here, and you can be sure that Currys PC World will be in on the action. The tech specialist will be turning out deals by the dozen, and some of the store's bargains have already started to flood in.

Black Friday 2016: Best deals to expect from Apple

Yes, that Apple. The same Apple that almost never shaves so much as a farthing off its product prices unless it's trying to ship fancy kit to students.

But that's how big of a deal Black Friday is – even Apple gets involved.

Related: Apple Black Friday deals

We don’t really know what Apple will be offering just yet, but in previous years we've seen modest savings of up to £80 off many of its iPad, Mac and iPod Touch models. Pretty stingy then, but at least it's something.

US retailer Target has already listed a bunch of deals on Apple products, including 25% off all Apple TV models, and savings on the iPad Pro and Beats Solo2 Wireless headphones too. Unfortunately, we're not yet privy to UK-centric savings, so stay tuned to this page for the latest.

Your best bet is to head to Apple's site on the day, or check out leading UK mobile retailers such as Carphone Warehouse if it's a bargain iPhone that you're after, as there may be savings on offer.

Check out Cycling Weekly for all the best bike deals this Black Friday!

Black Friday 2016: Best deals to expect from eBay

Traditional retailers will be out in force this Black Friday, dishing out deals in abundance. But you can expect similar deal-mongering from online retailer eBay, which has already confirmed that there will be plenty of savings to be found on November 25.

Related: Best eBay Black Friday deals UK

Unsurprisingly, eBay will also be offering discounted products on Cyber Monday too – that’s November 28.

You have to wonder with some of these so-called deals. £270 is a rip-off for a carpet cleaner. The fact that they once asked for even more changes nothing.

November 25, 2016, 2:20 am

Dells offers you promoted here were a joke. They were supposed to start at midnight for their laptop offer and the site kept throwing up errors. making online buying impossible They opened a phone line where i spent over an hour on hold and then they tweeted that they were all sold out whilst i was still on hold. God knows how anybody managed to order with them. Not happy at all. Dell are awful and handled it really badly. Just check out all the angry tweets aimed at them between midnight and 2am. Even their onsite chat support (which they told people to use) didn't work. It wasn't possible to contact them.

November 25, 2016, 6:41 am

I am so sick of these "Black Friday" promotions. I have un subscribed from virtually all of them due to the constant barrage of emails. Would be also good to see the review sites to stop advertising Black Friday garbage as well.

November 25, 2016, 6:42 am

Totally agree. It's a disgraceful and then you see how much profit there is in these plastic over hyped rubbish products. Makes me want to puke.
