After 18 months of legal proceedings EMI and The Beatles have reached a settlement in their dispute over unpaid royalties and this could lead to a chart phenomenon...

"I can confirm that we have reached a mutually acceptable settlement and that we are not going to say anything more than that," said an EMI spokeswoman.

The Beatles had been battling for £30m in unpaid royalties from album sales and the way is now likely to be paved for the Fab Four to finally make their entire back catalogue available for download online. Consequently, with singles and album charts now calculated by taking into account online music sales many have now predicted this will lead to a complete whitewash of both the Top 10 and the Top 40 as fans scramble to get their hands on all time classics like Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, Revolver and hits such as Hey Jude, Penny Lane and Help!

The agreement also brings to a close the second of The Beatle's major legal cases after its 25 year battle with Apple Inc over its name and logo was settled in February.

EMI is still in discussions with the Beatles over the finer details of getting its songs online but inevitably it will happen and once they do the biggest question is unlikely to be "Will they get it Number One?" but "Which track will get to Number One?"

Personally, I'd love it to be 'I Am The Walrus'...
