We're not in the habit of handing out full marks and Editor's Choice Awards all that often, but the Panasonic PT-AE3000 we reviewed in February got just that treatment and it now has a successor, the PT-AE4000 - which if we go by the product number alone, should be about 1,000 times better!

If you examine the pictures you'll see the PT-AE4000 is cut from the same cloth as its predecessor, so the differences are more fundamental than a new lick of paint. These include the second iteration of Panasonic's Lens Memory technology, which aims to eliminate the Cinemascope issue and offer a true 2.35:1 aspect cinema experience.

Aside from this the main difference between the two is a new 'red rich lamp' and dynamic iris, which supposedly boosts the contrast ratio of the projector from 60,000:1 to an incrementally better 80,000:1. Other specs include the obligatory 1,920 x 1,080 (Full HD) resolution and 1,600 ANSI Lumens brightness, both of which are unchanged.

Connectivity is also unchanged, comprising three v1.3 HDMI input, two component video inputs, composite video, S-Video, a serial port, D-SUB and an RS-232 input.

Riyad was recently treated to a demo of the PT-AE4000 and says it "looked pretty sweet". However, if that nugget of feedback isn't enough to justify a £2,000 projector purchase (exact pricing is to be confirmed), then expect a review in the not too distant future, with the projector itself going on sale from the end of October.
