Having already picked up on details of AMD's next generation of high-end CPUs today, it seems only fair to share a few details of the company's forthcoming low-end processors too. Newly appointed CEO, Dirk Meyer, has confirmed that AMD will be detailing an atom-rivalling low-power chip come November – confirming details leaked earlier this year.

The CPU, codenamed Bobcat, is expected to launch with a 1GHz clock speed, 256KB of L2 cache and support for a single 800MHz DDR2 DIMM. The CPU will sport a TDP of 8W, which is higher than Atom's 2.5W, although Atom's memory controller is inside the accompanying chipset, which itself has a 6W TDP.

What's most interesting about Bobcat, on balance, is that AMD is taking so long to get it out the door. With Intel struggling to meet demand for Atom, it would seem fairly logical that AMD would want to offer an alternative as soon as possible. It is, of course, possible that AMD simply isn't able to release a processor any sooner than it currently seems to. There is an argument, too, that there may not be much profitability in the low-end market, making AMD's development there less valuable than the high-end market.
