There has been a lot of conjecture about what official third party applications we'll see on the iPhone once its SDK hits the ground sometime in February, but this could be one of the most intriguing...

InformationWeek is reporting that it has 'confirmed' IBM will release its software across the full range of Apple Products, including the iPhone. Backing this up is the LaCrosseTribune.com which claims an IBM spokesman told them "we have a lot in common [with Apple]. We're going to cross-pollinate."

Now despite this comment sounding unnecessarily icky, this does pose an interesting proposition. Both Lotus Notes and Lotus Symphony - the latter a free download based on software by OpenOffice - would give the Mac platform a serious competitor to Microsoft Office and, in the case of the iPhone (and presumably iPod touch) give it the productivity software all detractors claim currently prohibits it from being a true smartphone.

A formal announcement is said to be near, though I'd question whether Steve Jobs despotism gives IBM permission to let it out of the bag before the iPhone SDK grand unveiling.

Whatever next? An iPhone version of Microsoft Office? No, I really don't think so either...
