Vista shipped over a year late and even then ambitious features were stripped and basic functionality like file transfers doesn't work very well which means early (and aspiring) adopters have been screaming out for a Service Pack. Rumours today suggest they might be about to get our wish – and much sooner than expected...

The chatter across the wires today is that the first beta of Vista SP1 could arrive this month with an official release in November. This is a rather stunning revelation considering all talk was of a potential delay well into next year. An exact date for the beta has even been suggested as 16 July, but I'd take this with a pinch of salt.

So if we do get a pleasant surprise a week today what can we expect? Hot favourites are said to be performance optimisations including reduced CPU usage (a must in my book), faster boot up and shut down times, support for ExFat, a BitLocker upgrade to cover the entire Vista volume and... yes, oh god yes... a fix to reduce the desperate file transfer times.

You'll notice most of the talk here is about fixes rather than improvements and I have a sneaking feeling that should these July and November rumours be true it is because – like Vista itself – targets have been cut drastically just to a) get it out and b) improve confidence in those (wisely) sticking to XP.

Roll on Monday!
