IFA, Berlin: The lines between tablet and smartphone have been blurred even further this morning with the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Note, a 5.3in smartphone with a Super AMOLED screen boasting a pixel density of 285ppi.

Samsung unveiled the smartphone (we’ll call it that for the moment) at its IFA press conference this morning. The handset’s screen has a resolution of 1280 x 800, which should ensure that it’s at least as sharp as the screen we saw on the Galaxy S II.

The Galaxy Note comes with a powerful 1.4GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage, an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera.

The Galaxy Note moniker is explained by the presence of a dedicated stylus, called the S Pen, which slides out of the bottom of the Note to, well, take notes. The stylus is supported by most of the phone’s native apps including note-taking, email, IM, video and photo viewers, and Samsung will be releasing an SDK shortly after the Note's release – to help build a large eco-system around the stylus. Check out the video below to see the stylus in action.

Despite the large screen size and the presence of a stylus, the Note manages to retain the sleek lines of the Galaxy S II with an overall thickness of just 9.65mm.

The Note is currently running Android 2.3.5 with the usual TouchWiz UI on top, which has added a row of five launcher icon along the bottom of the lock screen, allowing you drag them upwards to unlock the phone into a particular app. Though we could imagine this being one of the first devices to get the Ice Cream Sandwich update.

Pricing and release dates are unknown at this stage, but Samsung is calling the Galaxy Note a global hero device and it is currently in discussions with carriers. Samsung has also confirmed to This is my next that there will be a 4G version of the Note going on sale.

Our man Ed Chester is at the Samsung press conference and getting his mitts on the Note as we speak so be sure to check back soon for our hands-on preview. For now let us know in the comments if you think this form factor is a winner or falls between two stools.
