It seems Sony is desperate to continue the trend it has set of doing everything the Xbox 360 can do only much later. The latest example: movie downloads.

Sony’s PlayStation Studio Chief Phil Harrison spilled the beans in an interview with 1UP saying “The decision we made to put a hard drive in every PlayStation 3 was because we saw the long term benefit. The ten year plan of allowing people to download all kinds of digital content to their PlayStation 3 -- not just games but movies, music, HD, standard definition TV, you name it. And that was a significant investment, but it was absolutely the right thing to do.”

Now the eagle eyed/eyed amongst you will have realised the ’10 year plan’ reference but Harrison was keen to stress that while “We don't have the announcements that you're probably looking for today, but it is digital data. We have a hard drive, we have a commerce engine, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out we will have that on the network very shortly.

Of course this is all well and good and “very shortly” will excite we British more than most since we’ll only get our hands on the console in late March anyhow. That said, Microsoft has had movie downloads in the Xbox 360 since 22 November.

So at this rate 2008 will be the year Sony announces the PS3 will be getting an extremely affordable external HD DVD drive...
