How to find 4K HDR content on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video

Netflix and Amazon are always adding new 4K HDR goodies to their library, but finding that High Dynamic Range content isn’t straightforward on either service. This list will ensure you keep track of every addition to each service

HDR (High Dynamic Range) helps films and TV shows take advantage of better contrast and greater brightness levels. HDR refers to the ability of a TV to display a more ‘dynamic’ range of colours, with brighter whites and deeper blacks for a more accurate looking picture.

Not only are HDR-ready TVs readily available, but streaming services such as Amazon, Netflix, Rakuten TV, Apple TV Plus and Disney Plus support the technology, whether it’s industry standard HDR10, or the dynamic metadata versions in Dolby Vision HDR or HDR10+.

After dabbling with Dolby Vision, Amazon’s Prime Video has ensconced itself in HDR10+ territory, while Netflix has placed itself in the Dolby Vision camp.

Unfortunately, it’s not always easy to find that 4K HDR content. Here’s how you HDR content on each service.

How to find 4K HDR content on Netflix

You’ll need to do a few things before you’re able to find 4K HDR content on Netflix.

Firstly, you’ll need a 4K TV and/or a 4K capable device that supports the Netflix app. To get the best picture quality, you’ll need devices that are compatible with HDR10 and Dolby Vision. A significant chunk of the programmes and films that Netflix has produced in 4K HDR have been mastered in Dolby Vision.

For those watching watching on a Blu-ray player, it needs to be connected via the HDMI port that supports HDCP 2.2 or later. Netflix recommends an internet connection of 25Mbps, with streaming quality set to High in the app settings.

Last, but not least, is access to Netflix’s Ultra HD Premium plan. That’s your gateway to 4K HDR content, and it grants the ability of watching on four screens at one time, as well as downloading on four devices.

Got all that? Well, the next step is actually finding the content. For those with compatible TVs, Netflix puts a HDR or Dolby Vision logo next to its HDR titles. Annoyingly, there isn’t a dedicated HDR section, but there is a row of Ultra HD content of around twenty titles. Not everything that is 4K on Netflix is in HDR, but it at least will put you in the right direction.

But if you want a complete list of 4K HDR content, you’ve come to the right place.

How to find 4K HDR content on Amazon Prime Video

Bosch on Amazon Prime Video

Amazon beat Netflix to the punch with 4K HDR content, but there’s not as much of it and finding HDR-ready content in Prime Video is just as problematic. Amazon offers the ability to stream content in 4K, or purchase it outright.

This list will focus on content available in Prime Video rather than titles that you can buy or stream. To play 4K HDR, an internet connection of at least 15Mbps is needed.

Like Netflix, Amazon shows an HDR logo next to selected titles on compatible TVs. Amazon Prime Video can stream in HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, and like Netflix there’s no specific HDR category but there is a row of UHD content on the main page (you just have to navigate down to find it).

In order to find HDR titles you’ll need to search or scroll through content. There should be label next in the video information indicating whether it’s HDR (this includes HDR10+) or Dolby Vision.
