Vodafone has today announced the launch of two new budget smartphones.

The mobile operator this morning pulled the covers off the Vodafone Smart prime 6 (above left) and Vodafone Smart first 6 (above right), both of which cost significantly less than £50 on PAYG.

The Smart prime has been hailed by the firm as its “most advanced 4G smartphone”. At £79 on PAYG, it enters the market as one of the most affordable 4G handsets, going head-to-head with the Moto G 2 (2014).

Coming in at 141.65 x 71.89 x 9.6mm and a shade over £155g, it features a 5-inch, 1,280 x 720 IPS display, an 8-megapixel primary camera and a 2-megapixel selfie-snapper.

On board is a 1.2GHz quad-core processor paired with 1GB of RAM, as well as 8GB of internal storage, which you can boost via the microSD card slot.

The Smart first 6, meanwhile, hasn’t been given the 4Gtreatment, and will cost just £40 on PAYG.

It’s a lot more basic, coming with a 4-inch, WVGA display and a 2-megapixel rear camera. It runs on Android 4.4 KitKat and has 4GB of internal storage.

While we can see it appealing to consumers on a really tight budget, there are a lot of outstanding, slightly pricier handsets on the market right now that we think you should consider first, including the Motorola Moto E 2 (2015) and Honor Holly.
