Fresh figures on the last quarter’s app markets reveal Google’s Play Store came out on top, beating iOS in total app downloads.
The new stats, courtesy of App Annie, show that Google’s mobile marketplace saw 60 per cent more downloads than the Apple equivalent.
This doesn’t mean Apple’s falling behind however, as the fruity firm was revealed to have generated roughly 60 per cent more revenue from app sales than its Google-stamped rival.
The most obvious explanation for this is Google’s push into emerging markets.
Adoption has been strong in countries like India, but people willing to spend large amounts of cash on Angry Birds sequels might be few and far between.
Google’s increased downloads could also simply be a result of having a bigger selection of apps in the store.
As of October 14, the Play Store boasted 1,374,152 apps. The last figures out of Apple came in June, revealing an iOS app roster of around 1.2 million.
Both platforms are sure to see a boon over the approaching Christmas season as a raft of new flagship smartphones hit store shelves.
