You'll need an adapter to plug your Nexus 5X into your computer

Does it play nice with your computer?

Google's two new Nexus phones have USB-C ports, which is all well and good – it will soon be the new standard, after all. But the Nexus 5X only comes with a USB-C to USB-C cable – in other words, if you want to plug it into your computer, you're likely to need an adapter.

Most computers' USB ports are USB-A. So the adapter you'll need is USB-C to USB-A. Unless, that is, you have one of the few PCs with a USB-C port, like the Apple MacBook and Chromebook Pixel.

What's more strange is that the higher-specced Nexus 6P does come with a USB-C to USB-A cable, so you can charge it from your computer or use it to transfer files.

Naturally, Google hasn't shouted about the lack of standard cable with the 5X. Doubtless quite a few phone buyers will be frustrated when they take it out of the box and try to plug it in.

Google unveiled both new handsets at an event on Tuesday. The 5X is made by LG – who made the original Nexus 5 – while the 6P is made by Huawei. Both run Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the latest version of Google's mobile operating system. This brings new features like Google Now on Tap and a new Doze mode that claims it will extend your phone's battery life.

Marshmallow will come to other Nexus devices from next week. Everyone else will have to wait, we're afraid. If you want to see when your phone will get the upgrade to Marshmallow, check out our handy guide.
