Moira: We go hands-on with Overwatch’s new hero

Blizzcon 2017 saw a flurry of announcements by the blockbuster developer, including the reveal of Moira, an all-new support hero for Overwatch. Capable of healing allies and dealing huge damage to enemies, she’s a force we’re very eager to cause chaos with when she arrives in the near future.

Overwatch – Moira Gameplay Preview

Overwatch players have had their fingers crossed regarding a new support character for a while now, hoping a villainous new face would emerge to give Talon Company a helping hand after Doomfist’s arrival. Well, we’re in luck, as Blizzcon 2017 saw the reveal of Moira, an all-new hero for the team-based shooter. Capable of effectively healing her allies and dealing huge damage to enemies, she’s a formidable force I’ve had a lot of fun with thus far.

At first glance, Moira is very similar to Zenyatta. Both are capable of passively healing allies while gradually wearing away oncoming foes. They move at a similar speed, complemented by an incredibly sharp firing range that makes attacking from a distance perfectly viable. In her left hand, Moira can fire a yellow beam that continuously heals nearby allies. On her right is a more sinister tool, a purple beam that can hinder enemies from a great distance. It’s fun, intuitive and very easy to get used to.

Combining both of these attacks became a regular part of my strategy, providing nearby allies with support while occasionally digging into enemies. Moira can’t exactly hold her own during an intense firefight involving multiple heroes, but one-on-one confrontations can be won, and prove to be wonderfully satisfying when I emerged victoriously. At times, Moira’s attack stream can feel a little too powerful, but I imagine that’ll be streamlined before a wider release.

Another of Moira’s abilities fires a bouncing orb in front of her, which can heal or damage depending on what you decide. Once it tracks down a hero it’ll latch onto them, doing its thing for a small window of time before immediately disappearing. It’s a great way to throw enemies into a panic before advancing on an objective or helping a tank push forward alongside the payload.

Coalescence is Moira’s devastating ultimate ability. Like all her other skills, it’s capable of both dispatching foes and healing friends. Except, it now does so simultaneously with a long-range projectile attack that has a worryingly short charge rate. If a firefight proves too dangerous, Moira can temporarily make herself invisible to escape danger. Doing so requires quick reflexes, as it doesn’t last long.

First Impressions

Moira is already a solid addition to the Overwatch universe, making a great first impression with her fantastic character design and satisfying list of skills. While some of her repertoire could use further refinement, I’m excited to see how players respond once she arrives.
