Xiaomi 14 vs Xiaomi 13: What’s new?

The Xiaomi 14 has finally been confirmed for a global launch, several months after the smartphone first appeared in China toward the end of 2023.

Sitting just under the Xiaomi 14 Ultra with a more reasonable £849 price, the Xiaomi 14 is the most mainstream device in the company’s 2024 line-up. That might have you wondering how the smartphone compares to last year’s Xiaomi 13

Keep reading to discover everything new on the Xiaomi 14, from the design to performance to battery life.

The Xiaomi 14 has a brighter screen

One major improvement arriving with the Xiaomi 14 is its brighter display. In fact, the screen is more than 50% brighter than that of its predecessor at peak brightness, which should make the display easier to read outdoors and in direct sunlight.

To put that into numbers, the Xiaomi 13 has a brightness of 1200 nits or 1900 nits at peak brightness, whereas the Xiaomi 14 has a brightness of 1000 nits or a peak brightness of 3000 nits.

While both displays include a 120Hz variable refresh rate, the Xiaomi 13 only moved between 60Hz and 120Hz. The Xiaomi 14 can jump from 1HZ to 120Hz which should allow the phone to more effectively preserve battery when a fast refresh rate isn’t required.

Finally, the display’s resolution has been increased from 1080 x 2400 and 414ppi on the Xiaomi 13 to 1200 x 2670 and 460ppi on the Xiaomi 14.

We found that the screen on the Xiaomi looked great, especially with the added brightness levels.

The Xiaomi 14 packs a more advanced chipset

When Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 back in October, we learnt that the Xiaomi 14 would be the first smartphone to carry the flagship chipset

Compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Xiaomi 13, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 should offer a 30% boost in CPU performance, 25% in GPU performance and a huge 98% increase in NPU performance. The chipset also brings improved power efficiency which should work with Xiaomi’s Loop LiquidCool technology to keep the smartphone cool during gaming and streaming.

We haven’t been able to put the Xiaomi 14 through any benchmark tests just yet so check back for our full review of the Xiaomi 14 in the future.

The Xiaomi 14 includes a better camera

The Xiaomi 14 also includes improvements to the camera module.

The triple camera on the Xiaomi 13 consisted of a 50-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens with 3.2x optical zoom. The Xiaomi 14’s camera layout also includes a 50-megapixel main camera, however both the ultra-wide angle and telephoto lenses have been upgraded to 50-megapixel sensors.

Turn the two phones over and you’ll find matching 32-megapixel selfie cameras. However, where the Xiaomi 13 offered 1080p recording using the front camera, the Xiaomi 14 ups the video resolution to 4K.

Our first impression of the Xiaomi 14’s camera has been very positive and we found detail to be fantastic and colour reproduction to be true to life. However, those looking for the most advanced Xiaomi camera will want to look toward the pricier Xiaomi 14 Ultra.

The Xiaomi 14 supports faster charging

Finally, the Xiaomi 14 benefits from a slightly larger battery and faster charging speeds.

Where the Xiaomi 13 includes a 4500 mAh battery, the Xiaomi 14 packs a 4610 mAh one. The Xiaomi 14 also offers 90W wired charging, increased from the 67W charging on the Xiaomi 13.

Both Xiaomi phones support 50W wireless charging and 10W reverse wireless charging.
