Report: HTC making new Nexus phones

HTC is working on two new Nexus phones according to a recent report.

The report from India Today, and picked up by Focus Taiwan, claims the new handsets are codenamed Marlin and Sailfish, and will be based on the HTC 10 flagship.

Marlin and Sailfish are also expected to include Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 processor, rather than the Snapdragon 820 which features in many of this year’s flagship handsets, including the Galaxy S7, LG G5 and, of course, the HTC 10.

Google’s previous flagships, the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P, were developed by LG and Huawei respectively, and both were stellar offerings.

And it seems, if the report is to be believed, the rumoured HTC-built handsets could be continuing the trend by coming with a slight performance edge over the competition thanks to their processor upgrades.

The report is in line with several rumours claiming that HTC will be developing the next Nexus hardware.

Prior to Google’s big developer conference, I/O 2016, many were predicting we would get a glimpse of the new smartphones at the event, but the conference came and went without any sign of them.

Google usually launches new Nexus hardware alongside the latest Android versions, and is gearing up for the launch of Android N, the final build of which is expected to arrive this Summer.

That means, if the report is correct, we could see the Marlin and Sailfish models fairly soon.

Of course, neither Google or HTC have confirmed the report as yet, but expect more news on this in the very near future.
