The Nvidia RTX 4090 has been officially unveiled, and is confirmed to be the flagship model of the new Nvidia RTX 4000 Series.
It features the new Nvidia Lovelace architecture, using a TSMC 4nm process node to see a major generational performance upgrade.
Nvidia claims the RTX 4080 is between 2x and 4x faster than the existing RTX 3090 Ti, making it the most powerful consumer graphics card that Nvidia has to offer.

Release date
The Nvidia RTX 4090 graphics card will be available to buy from 12 October 2022.
The Nvidia RTX 4080 was announced alongside it, but won’t arrive in stores until November.
Price
The Nvidia RTX 4090 has a $1599/£1679 starting price. This unfortunately makes it $100 more expensive than the preceding Nvidia RTX 3090 when it first launched.
As a result, the RTX 4090 is the most expensive consumer graphics card that Nvidia has ever launched.
Specs
The Nvidia RTX 4090 flaunts the new Lovelace architecture, which uses a 4nm TSMC process node and a whopping 76 billion transistors – that’s a significant increase on Ampere’s 28 billion transistor count.
The upgrade to 3rd Gen RT cores will also enhance ray tracing performance, while the 4th Gen Tensor Cores enables compatibility with the new DLSS 3.0 software, which helps to boost frame rate performance.
Nvidia isn’t solely relying on its new architecture though, as it’s also increased the number of CUDA Cores. The RTX 4090 packs 16,384 CUDA Cores, while the preceding RTX 3090 only features 10,496.
Both the RTX 4090 and RTX 3090 feature 24GB GDDR6X of memory, so there’s no upgrade here – not that it needed it.
Nvidia claims its new card is between 2x and 4x faster than the Nvidia RTX 3090 Ti, with the extent of the performance uplift depending on the game. That’s an incredible achievement when you consider the RTX 3090 Ti is currently the absolute fastest consumer graphics card currently available.
But having such a significant performance boost has its disadvantages. Nvidia has confirmed the RTX 4090 has a graphics card power of 450W, which is 100W more than the previous RTX 3090 card.
This means Nvidia recommends at least a 850W system power to run the new graphics card, which may force you into upgrading your PSU.
