Huawei: ‘We want to compete with the iPhone 6’

Huawei has announced its intentions to become a dominant player on the smartphone scene, suggesting it ‘wants to compete with the iPhone 6.’

Having last week unveiled the Huawei Ascend P6 as a competitor to the current iPhone 5, Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One, the Chinese manufacturer has suggested it will continue to improve over the coming months and years, and is plotting a true rival to Apple’s next-generation smartphones.

“With our flagship phones we want to compete with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and iPhone 5, iPhone 5S and iPhone 6,” Richard Yu, Huawei’s CEO stated. “It is this level of product that is our target.”

Although still someway off holding the recognisable brand appeal of the likes of Apple, Samsung or HTC, Huawei has risen to prominence as a supplier of wallet-friendly smartphones that pack a bit of grunt. The Huawei Ascend P6 was launched as the world’s thinnest smartphone, squeezing a quad-core PCU and 8-megapixel camera into a metal shell just 6.18mm thick.

Suggesting that the smartphone market evolves too quickly for one company to get comfortable at the top, Yu highlighted Samsung’s rapid rise to become an Apple beater as proof Huawei can follow a similar path.

“The smartphone market is so dynamic, no matter how successful you are it doesn’t mean you will be successful tomorrow,” he said. “We will make sure we do whatever we can do to challenge the market.”

He added: “The technologies involved in smartphones are changing very quickly and at Huawei we want to take a leadership on industry innovation.

“We are putting huge resources, huge money and research and development across this. We spend so much money on R&D and worldwide we have over 70,000 R&D people. This will help us take a lead on innovation.”
