Rose is an interesting entry on the Oculus Store. It’s an app from Penrose Studios, makers of VR films, which features a particularly inspired short film called Rosebud.

Originally a DK2 demo for the Oculus Rift called ‘The Rose and I’, Rosebud tells the story of a boy who meets a flower. A pared down version of the original film, which was premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, is what appears on the Gear VR app.

Whereas the DK2 demo allowed users to move around using the Rift’s DK2 tracking system, the Gear VR’s lack of such a system meant the developers had to create a new way of moving around within Rosebud. The Torbit system is the result. It uses the touchpad on the side of the Gear VR to let you change your perspective of the events in the film.
