TomTom GO LIVE Camper & Caravan - Routing, LIVE Features and Verdict

This is all very handy information, but the TomTom GO LIVE Camper & Caravan is also meant to avoid sending your large recreational vehicle along a road that it can't traverse. To test this, we calculated a route from London to a New Forest campsite with realistic dimensions input into all the vehicle profiles.

TomTom GO LIVE Camper & Caravan - Performance

The Camper & Caravan suggested different routes for a camper to other vehicles, and various journey times, with the car profile unsurprisingly being the quickest, and others depending on the speed limitations imposed. We also tried route calculations that would pass under a low bridge and along a road deliberately narrowed to permit only cars. The Camper & Caravan routed round these, except in car mode, as it should. We can't deduce from these tests that it will save you in every case, but this is a promising start.
TomTom GO LIVE Camper & Caravan
The TomTom GO LIVE Camper & Caravan comes with the latest incarnation of TomTom's LIVE services, which has seen some notable additions, but also a serious reduction. The jewel in the LIVE crown is still HD Traffic. This is now in its sixth incarnation, which was released in the UK in December 2012.

The frequently updated speed camera locations and weather forecasting remain from the original version of LIVE. Recent additions to the portfolio are the Trip Advisor and Expedia search options, allowing you to call up descriptions and reviews of hotels, restaurants and attractions. Like the GO LIVE 1005 World, the Camper & Caravan also includes the facility to connect with Twitter and Tweet your journey status to all and sundry, a feature that needs to be used with care if you don't want to irritate your followers.

On a more negative note, the much-loved Google Local Search is no longer part of TomTom's LIVE services. This is because Google stopped supporting the system that it used, although we note that Google search can still be found in ALK CoPilot and Garmin StreetPilot.

Whatever the reason, now Google Local Search has been replaced by TomTom's own Local Search, which hasn't met with a particularly favourable response from TomTom users. We found Local Search missed destinations that were found in Google's Local Search, for example Bedford Autodrome wasn't discovered, even if we centred the search around Bedford. We had found this in Google Local Search in previous TomTom devices. Similarly, Holmsley Campsite in the New Forest wasn't found, although it was available in the campsite POI database.
TomTom GO LIVE Camper & Caravan
The Camper & Caravan also includes TomTom's improved voice command system, to help you set your destination hands free. However, once the destination has been input, the navigational experience is no different from other current TomTom models. It incorporates IQ Routes, so calculates times based on real historical traffic speeds rather than nominal maximum road speeds, for greater accuracy. Verbal instructions are clear, and the map is augmented by full-screen graphics at major junctions, to ensure you get into an appropriate lane in good time.

Verdict

You can pick up TomTom's regular GO LIVE 1005 with European maps for £230 now. The £90 premium for the Europe-only TomTom GO LIVE Camper & Caravan seems a little steep. Nevertheless, it does include some unique abilities that will be very handy if you're planning a free-form UK or European trip in your trusty Winnebago. You will need to be a regular camper and caravan user to make the GO LIVE Camper & Caravan worth the extra money, but it's based on TomTom's top sat-nav model, so provides quality sat-nav facilities.
