Samsung Gear smartwatch with Android Wear hinted at

Samsung could well be readying another new Samsung Gear smartwatch, this time with Google's own Android Wear OS onboard.

An FCC filing for a new Samsung smartwatch has emerged under the model name SM-R382. As Samsung fan website SammyToday points out, this naming system would suggest another addition to the Samsung Gear 2 family.

However, the new device appears to be around 10mm shorted than the Gear 2, and there's reason to believe that it may operate quite differently too.

It's being speculated that this mystery smartwatch could well be Samsung's first Android Wear device.

While Samsung has gone with its own Tizen OS for its latest Samsung Gear 2 smartwatch (as well as retrofitting the Samsung Galaxy Gear with the same lightweight OS), that doesn't mean the company has turned its back on Android Wear. It's worth remembering that Samsung was listed as a partner when Google announced Android Wear back in March.

Also, Samsung has a track record of supporting multiple smartphone operating systems simultaneously.

Adding a smidgen of thickening agent to the plot, SammyToday originally pointed out that Samsung had filed a trademark for a device called the Samsung Wear just two weeks ago. That process appears to have been halted by Samsung, but the mere intention seems to point to an Android Wear-powered Samsung smartwatch.

So when might we see Samsung's first Android Wear smartwatch? It's quite possible that we could see it at Google I/O, which is taking place on June 25 and 26.

That's where Google is expected to run through its new mobile OS in detail, as well as to show off some of the first Android Wear devices. Up to now, we've only heard about the LG G Watch and the Motorola Moto 360, but there's no reason Samsung couldn't make a late (or at least unheralded) addition to the party.
