HTC tipped to re-enter the tablet race with low-end H7

HTC is working on a new tablet that looks set to launch in the coming weeks, a new report claims.

The Taiwanese tech giant is tipped to release the ‘HTC H7’ at some point during Q2 this year – that’s any time from now until the end of June.

This is a big deal, because although HTC is a big player when it comes to smartphones, it’s shied away from tablets in recent times.

HTC’s most recent offering to the tablet space was the Nexus 9, produced as part of Google’s Nexus program.

Unfortunately, the Nexus 9 received lukewarm critical reception as it tried to take on the iPad Air 2 in the high-end. Its predecessor, the Nexus 7, however, saw much success at an affordable mid-range price point.

Prior to that, the company’s success with slates had been minimal, with both the HTC Flyer and HTC Jetstream having flopped.

Back in February, however, we first heard talk that HTC was working on an Android tablet based on the Nexus 9.

The latest leak, courtesy of prolific rumour-spinner Upleaks, suggests the HTC H7 will be a low-end tablet, which means the only cues taken from the Nexus 9 could be in terms of physical build.

Earlier rumours consolidate this theory, with the device expected to carry a 9-inch display using a 4:3 aspect ratio.

That puts the device in direct competition with its own Nexus-stamped device, at least in terms of form factor.

HTC has made no official comment on the matter at this time, but if the Q2 rumour is true, we don’t have long to wait.
