HTC Rapid Charger 2.0 slashes charge time by 40%

It’s bad enough that most smartphones run out of battery by dinnertime, then you have to wait for them to charge as well. But HTC has slashed charging times with its Rapid Charger 2.0.

It promises to slash charge times by 40 per cent on certain HTC devices. It will work as a standard charger on any device with a microUSB port, but the HTC One (M8), HTC One (E8), HTC One Remix, HTC One (M8) Harmon Kardon Edition, and HTC Desire Eye will get juiced up in a fraction of the time.

The HTC Rapid Charger 2.0 uses Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 tech found in the latest handsets that run on Snapdragon chips.

Plug it into your handset for just 15 minutes, and you’ll get another eight hours of use. Impressive.

HTC isn’t the first major manufacturer to announce a quick charger. Motorola unveiled its Turbo Charger back in May. Again, this uses Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 2.0 tech which was announced last year.

HTC hasn’t announced a price or release date yet for the Rapid Charger 2.0. Motorola’s take on it retails for $35 (£22), so we’d expect it to be about the same.

Recently we saw the Pronto portable charger, which takes just five minutes to juice up. Which makes it ideal if you need to leave the house sharpish. Actually charging your phone will take a bit longer than that, however.

If it’s a rugged charger you’re after, check out the Kodiak Power Bank.
