Apple: iOS 9 adoption rate is now 61%

iOS 9 has been available for just over a month, and adoption is still running strong.

Apple’s developer data reveals that the new mobile operating system is now running on 61% of active devices.

That statistic is measured by devices – like the new iPhone 6S – accessing the App Store on October 19.

On September 21, Apple announced that iOS 9 had been installed on over 50% of active devices, so official figures show an 11% increase in just under a month.

However, several data analytics companies revealed to TrustedReviews that the actual iOS 9 adoption rate was more likely to be below 30%.

Regardless, the latest version of iOS – launched on September 16 – has achieved significantly higher adoption than its Android counterpart.

By the most recent measure – taken on October 5 – Google’s Lollipop OS holds a 23.5% share of Android devices.

That’s eclipsed by the earlier version – Android 4.4 KitKat – which has a majority share of 38.9%.

Unfortunately, this data has not been updated to include Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Google’s very latest mobile operating system.

Android’s slow adoption pace, relative to iOS, is largely down to the fragmentation of Google’s platform. While Apple can ship updates directly to the end user, Android devices are subject to lethargic manufacturer and carrier update processes.

It’s also worth noting that Android holds a significantly higher share of the global mobile market. In Q2 this year, Android held 82.8% of the market, while iOS laid claim to 13.9%.
