Optoma ML1000 Review - Sound and Conclusions Review

Optoma ML1000: Sound quality

Built-in projector audio systems are always inherently flawed by the way the sound the projector can produce will inevitably appear detached from the pictures being shown on the screen. But providing built-in audio is also crucial with portable projectors, since you don’t want to have to carry an external sound system along with the projector whenever you take it on the road.

Optoma ML1000In the ML1000’s case the sound quality from its stereo 6W speaker system, while not holding a candle to any sort of external sound system, is much better than that of most portable projectors. The soundstage is clean, reasonably widely dispersed, and even manages to push vocals slightly forward, so voices seem at least slightly closer to the onscreen action than is usually the case with projector audio systems.

Other Things to Consider

The ML1000 ships with a credit card-style remote control. Though this is so small that rather embarrassingly we failed to find it in the little carry bag that comes with the projector until we were told where to look! Needless to say we strongly recommend you always return the remote to its tiny internal pocket, or it will likely soon be lost.

The onscreen menus are pretty easy to follow and navigate, with our only complaint being that the picture adjustment options don’t deliver enough flexibility to make the ML1000 a good home as well as business projector.

Should I buy an Optoma ML1000?

If you’re not working to an especially tight budget and you want one of the most feature-packed, bright, colourful and sharp business presentation pictures the ultra-portable projector world has to offer, the ML1000 is a great option.

If you’re after something more genuinely pocket-sized, though, good options would be the 3M MP180 and possibly the Vivitek QUMI Q7 – though neither of these models are as bright and effective for presentations as the Optoma.

If you’re after a projector to do movie as well as business duties, the ML1000’s lack of contrast means it’s probably not the model for you.

Verdict

Optoma has delivered a stylish and powerful business aid with the ML1000. It casts aside the severe brightness limitations associated with most ultra-portable projectors to help you give professional-looking presentations with a minimum of clutter and fuss. It’s just a shame its picture characteristics don’t allow it to be as much of a projector all-rounder as we would have liked for its money.
