Windows 10 will finally arrive on older Lumia phones this month

Microsoft is belatedly planning to roll out the Windows 10 Mobile update for existing Lumia devices sometime this month.

According to internal communications seen by Venture Beat, the firm is planning to boost older handsets before March comes to an end.

Initially the update was expected in December before being touted for a February roll out. Neither happened.

Now, according to master leak artist Evan Blass, the next-gen OS will start landing once the only two Windows 10 Mobile phones on the market – the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL – receive the monthly service update for March.

According to the report, legacy Lumia owners will then be able to opt-in to download the Windows 10 update to their smartphones.

Once any bugs have been squashed, it’ll be automatically be rolled out to applicable Windows Phone 8 devices, according to Blass.

The long-delayed roll out comes as Microsoft’s mobile offering looks increasingly under threat.

The prospect of universal apps for mobile and desktop platforms had offered hope for the OS, which trails iOS and Android as a sparsely-used 3rd placed platform.

Microsoft’s Continuum platform, which promises to turn a Windows 10 phone into a fully functional PC when plugged into a monitor, mouse and keyboard accessory was also highly touted in 2015.

Microsoft’s heel-dragging in bringing the update to existing users, as well as the poor reception offered to the Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL range has further damaged the prospect of the company ever challenging the big two.
