We could see some surprising new game modes in Overwatch going forward
Blizzard Entertainment has told Trusted Reviews that Overwatch has a ‘very exciting year ahead of it’ in regards to seasonal events.
Speaking at BlizzCon 2017, lead software engineer Timothy Ford didn’t want to spoil any upcoming surprises but said the team has ‘really hit its stride’ with new game modes.
‘Very recently we unlocked a pretty important piece of technology that allowed us to make game modes much faster. And that kicked off with Halloween last year but now we’ve hit our stride where we have, we’re able to iterate and experiment with a bunch of game modes at a much faster clip. It’s gonna be an exciting year I think.’
Seasonal events in Overwatch such as Halloween, Christmas and Chinese New Year introduce a variety of new cosmetic items alongside temporary game modes. Some of these include Capture the Flag and Mei’s Snowball Fight.

When asked about potential evolutions to Overwatch’s progression system, such as hero-based challenges with in-game rewards, Ford said ‘that’s a really cool idea.’
‘Yeah, we talked a long time ago about challenge modes as we approached ship but we had to scope features but that’s actually a really cool idea, I like that.’
BlizzCon 2017 also saw the reveal of Moira, a support-hero capable of healing allies and dealing damage simultaneously. She’s great, and you can check out our impressions below:
‘Moira is already a solid addition to the Overwatch universe, making a great first impression with her fantastic character design and satisfying list of skills. While some of her repertoire could use further refinement, I’m excited to see how players respond once she arrives.’
