Samsung Galaxy S7 tipped to feature flexible display

Get that hearty pinch of salt at the ready, the first Samsung Galaxy S7 rumours have started to fly, with early reports suggesting the handset will boast a flexible display.

Despite the recently unveiled Galaxy S6 and spin-off Galaxy S6 Edge having yet to make it to retailers’ shelves, claimed insiders have hinted that the far from official S7 will adopt a curved screen as standard.

The speculative claims – which we much suggest be taken with a hearty dose of scepticism – have surfaced courtesy of Korean outlet ETNews.

According to their reports, an unnamed Samsung official has confirmed the company is looking to substantially increase its monthly output of flexible displays in order to prepare for next year’s S7 release.

“The expansion is inevitable because it has been announced that Samsung Electronic have requested 8 million flexible panels per month for ‘Galaxy S7’,” the unnamed insider is quoted as saying.

Although no further details on the device have been offered up, it is believed that the S7 could take the dual-side encompassing curved screen technology found on the S6 Edge and make it a standard, mainstream addition.

Again, we must stress that these reports are far from official and have not been independently verified.

Unveiled back at MWC 2015, the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are both set to hit retailers early next month. The Galaxy S6 release date has been pencilled in for April 10.

Featuring near identical specs sheets – bar their curved screen differences – both handsets pair 5.1-inch, 2560 x 1440 pixel QHD displays with Samsung’s own 64-bit Exynos 7420 processor.

With 3GB of RAM and Android 5.0 Lollipop on board, the devices have partnered a 16-megapixel, OIS-enhanced primary camera with a secondary, 5-megapixel snapper up front.
