Microsoft Surface Mini release date set for June

Microsoft may have sent out invites for a likely May 20 Surface Mini launch, but the tablet itself won’t hit shops until June.

That’s the claim being made by internet sources, at least.

According to Neowin, the Microsoft Surface Mini will be made available some time in June, though a precise release date may not have been decided upon just yet. Given that Microsoft’s first compact tablet has already been delayed by a number of months, what’s an extra few weeks going to cost?

Many were expecting the Microsoft Surface Mini to be unveiled at Microsoft’s last big Surface event back in September. Now reports are claiming that the device was indeed ready to go back then, but that manufacturing issues put paid to its launch.

As such, when it finally launches on May 20, the Microsoft Surface Mini will be pretty much unchanged from that original form. It’s effectively been on hold for the past eight months.

That means that the Mini Surface will likely be an 8-inch tablet with an ARM-based processor. That latter spec is important, as it would mean that the Surface Mini is to run on Windows RT as opposed to the full Windows 8.1 OS.

It’s also being claimed that the Microsoft Surface Mini will feature a precision stylus and heavy OneNote integration, making it a potential go-to device for all you note-takers out there.

One aspect of the Microsoft Surface Mini that’s still largely unknown is its price, but we’d be highly surprised if it wound up costing significantly more than the iPad Mini, which starts from £249.
