Microsoft Surface Mini launch looks set for May 20

Microsoft has sent out invitations for an event that could see the launch of the Microsoft Surface Mini.

The invitations definitely relate to the Microsoft Surface range of Windows 8 tablets, but the giveaway line is the request to “Join us for a small gathering.”

Microsoft, of course, doesn’t really do small gatherings, so there’s clearly something else at play in the expression.

It’s long been rumoured that Microsoft was working on a compact version of its Surface tablet. Back in February of last year, Microsoft CFO Peter Klein told a conference that the company was “really set up” for a 7-inch or 8-inch tablet device.

That so-called Microsoft Surface Mini was then tipped to appear at the company’s last Surface event back in September, but of course it didn’t.

The wording of this latest invite suggests that now could finally be the time for the Microsoft Surface Mini.

Little is known for sure concerning Microsoft’s step into the compact tablet market, but it’s rumoured to include a 7.5-inch 1440 x 1080 display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. That would appear to pitch it directly against the iPad mini, though it doesn’t appear to be as sharp as the iPad mini 2 Retina.

It’s also being claimed that the Microsoft Surface Mini would be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, which would mean that the OS would be Windows RT rather than full Windows 8.1.

We should know more in two weeks time, when the aforementioned “small gathering” takes place.
