LG G3 QHD 2K display confirmed

LG appears to have confirmed that its next flagship smartphone, the LG G3, will feature a Quad HD or 2K display.

Rumours that the Korean manufacturer would be the first major smartphone manufacturer to put a WQHD display into one of its products emerged last month. Now, fresh spec leaks appear to have confirmed that tip.

Over the weekend, specifications for the LG G3 appeared to turn up on the website of US mobile network Sprint.

According to that leak, the new phone would feature a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, a 13-megapixel rear camera, Android 4.4.2 and a 5.5-inch display.

Most interesting of all, however, was the reported resolution of that large screen – 2560 x 1440, or QHD. This would lead to a class-leading pixel density of more than 530ppi.

This has since been backed up by Engadget, which claims to have received confirmation of this Full HD-busting resolution from LG itself.

Quad HD displays (also referred to as 2K) are labelled as such because they feature four times the number of pixels of regular 720p displays, such as those found on the Samsung Galaxy S3 and the HTC One X.

So far, we’ve only seen such technology employed on a couple of Chinese smartphones such as the Oppo Find 7, where the technology comes in useful for rendering the country’s finely detailed script.

We’re expecting to see the LG G3 bring this super-sharp display technology to the wider world some time in July.
