Another report has emerged claiming that Samsung has won the right to make the vast majority of chips for Apple’s next iPhone.
South Korea’s MK News is reporting that Samsung has beat out rivals Qualcomm and TSMC to secure 75 percent of Apple’s chip order for the next iPhone.
Presumably that next chip will be known as the A9 and the new iPhone will be the iPhone 6S, if Apple’s established naming trends continue.
Samsung was completely frozen out of the process for delivering the A8 chip to the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, with TSMC winning the whole contract. This latest news might seem like something of an unlikely victory for one of Apple’s biggest rivals in the smartphone space, but it’s not exactly a surprise.
Back in November, it was rumoured that Samsung would be picking up around 80 percent of the orders for Apple’s A9 chip.
Then, in December, reports from elsewhere in South Korea claimed that Samsung had commenced production of the A9 chip at its Austin, Texas plant.

The A9 chip will apparently be built using 14-nanometre FinFET technology, which is 15 percent smaller than the current 20nm standard. This means that it require 35 percent less power to run despite having 20 percent more processing power.
It’s also been claimed that Samsung has secured the rights to build the S1 chip destined for the Apple Watch, which we could see some time in March.
