App Store visitors fail to browse past first 50 apps

Apple App Store visitors are failing to notice the majority of apps released, with 81 per cent of British users not even browsing beyond the first 50 apps, according to new research by mobile marketing specialist Surikate and GfK.

The research found that for an app that appears in the Top 25 Charts on the App Store, 75 per cent of iOS users will download the app directly from there, and without prior knowledge of it. However, 85 per cent of users will usually browse an app’s reviews, screenshot and check the price before hitting the download button.

With an average of 52.2 million visitors to the App Store each week, findability and searchability are vital
to get an app noticed.

Achieving the approval of Apple itself is also a proven way for developers to get their app noticed. 82 per cent of users surveyed discovered new apps purely by browsing the App Store home page, where its premium Featured slots are.

Developers can also utilise the power of social media to highlight their app, as two-thirds of people download apps through recommendations from family and friends.

The research also showed that most App Store browsers will do so from their homes (86 per cent). Only 23 per cent will discover new apps when on the move, and 22 per cent when they’re meant to be working.

An average iPhone 5 and iPad mini user has 30 or less apps installed on their phone, excluding those that are pre-installed. With over one million apps on the store, developers face high competition to get their app on a user’s handset.

“Our research shows that getting an app ranked among the Top 25 or higher in the App Store Charts is crucial, as just over half of iPhone users (57%) will not browse beyond the first 25 applications,” said Jules Minvielle, founder and CEO of Surikate.

“Surikate is constantly striving to provide innovative and unique solutions to generate traffic onto applications and provide app developers with qualitative feedback on different aspects of their applications,” he added.
