Ultimate Team makes EA $650 million a year

Publisher Electronic Arts has made a total of $1.5 billion in revenue with microtransactions across all platforms.

EA CFO Blake Jorgensen recently spoke to gameindustry.biz about how successful microtransactions have been for the company.

“We’ve been a leader in driving digital extra content for games, which really drives the profitability of this business.”

“The extra content business is a billion-three [$1.3 billion] a year. Half of that is roughly our Ultimate Team business.”

The Ultimate Team component of FIFA and Madden is the easily the biggest success for EA, generating over half of their annual digital profit.

Between them, Madden and FIFA make a total of $650 million in annual revenue, and this number will likely increase as time goes on.

Other digital content include purchases like season passes, in-game currency and customisable items for games such as Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefield Hardline.

We all knew that microtransactions were big business in the AAA market, but these figures are still impressive.
