Sony Xperia Z4: Walkman edition reportedly in the works

Listen up, audiophiles – Sony might be aiming its next blower straight at your lugholes, if the latest internet chatter is to be believed.

According to Japanese site iGeek, Sony is planning a music-focused ‘Walkman’ variant of its upcoming Xperia Z4 handset.

This isn’t as crazy as it might sound – we’ve already heard on the grapevine that multiple versions of the Xperia Z4 might be coming.

So what would a Walkman-toting Z4 look like? Well fortunately, we have a leaked image purported to be just that, with some specs in tow.

What may disappoint some of you though, is that it looks very much like a slim Xperia Z3 that runs an app mimicking the classic Walkman interface. We’re not surprised…

Perhaps more interesting is the inclusion of hi-res audio codec support, paired with S-Force PRO front-firing surround speakers with Sony’s S-Master digital amplifier.

Also tipped for the device is a 4-inch display with a 1440 x 720 resolution. That’s well below the 5.4/5.5-inch display we’re expecting for the Xperia Z4 proper, which makes it clear that this is a variant model.

On board will be a quad-core 2.3GHz Snapdragon 801 processor with 3GB of RAM, 32GB of built-in memory, a 2000mAh battery, and an 8-megapixel snapper to boot.

The new device is tipped to be landing at this year’s Mobile World Congress – that’s the Barcelona-based tech-fest running from March 2 to 5.

That puts it alongside the rumoured launch date for the actual Xperia Z4, which is expected to tout much higher specs, and a higher price tag too.
