The Sony Xperia M2 will also come in white and purple

Sony claims the Xperia M2, its new mid-range smartphone that replaces the popular Sony Xperia M, has the "best smartphone technology in its class".

The new phone, which Sony claims will be available for less than 220 Euros (~£180), has 4G built-in and what Sony believes to be the best camera of any phone in its price bracket. It also shares the new 'OmniBalance' design philosophy of the Xperia Z2, Sony's new flagship smartphone that was also launched today at MWC 2014.

"Xperia M2 is an ultra fast smartphone that offers brilliant specs and performance, reaching new audiences with a mid-range price. This is a great device for the customer looking for a smartphone that has it all," says Calum MacDougall, Director of Xperia Marketing at Sony Mobile Communications. "It combines the best of Sony, bringing you our latest technologies complimented with a one of its kind, unique entertainment offer never before seen on a mid-range smartphone."

Sony Xperia M2 specs and features

So, what's the substance behind these claims? Well, the Sony Xperia M2's CPU is a Snapdragon 400 with four cores clocked at 1.2GHz, which should be more than ample for most tasks. There's no word on the RAM available, but Sony confirmed an impressive sounding 2,300mAh battery.

Less impressive, on paper at least, is the Sony Xperia M2's screen, a 4.8-inch 'qHD' screen. What's qHD? It's 960 x 540, which isn't an especially high-resolution for such a large screen.

Clearly Sony has invested elsewhere, the main area being the Sony Xperia M2's camera. The M2's camera is an 8MP effort using a Sony Exmor RS sensor with Autoscene Recognition (that's automatic mode, right?) and HDR. More interesting is Sony's work with third-party developers to integrate apps like Vine and FX Guru into its custom camera app, which could add something a little bit different to the shooting experience.

Sony also plans a Dual SIM version of the Xperia M2.

Sony Xperia M2 release date and price

The Xperia M2's released date is pegged for April 2014, so we shouldn't have to wait long, and it's aiming for a price of less than 220 Euros, or approximately £180 based on the current exchange rate.

We'll be posting our first impressions of the Xperia M2 from MWC 2014 just as soon as we can get our mitts on one.
