PS4 Pro doesn't have 4K Blu-ray because you're too busy streaming, says Sony

Sony has commented on the PS4 Pro’s surprising lack of a 4K Blu-ray player, and you might not be happy with the response.

Speaking to The Guardian, PlayStation boss Andrew House said "physical media continues to be a big part of the games business, we see a trend on video towards streaming.”

"Certainly with our user base, it's the second biggest use case for people's time on the system so we place more emphasis on that area."

The sales of 4K media players aren’t exactly staggering, but with Sony waving the 4K flag so high it feels like a huge omission to not include such a player in its latest console.

Fortunately, the PS4 Pro will be fully capable of 4K-streaming via Netflix and YouTube, but those with a physical collection are better off with the Xbox One S at the moment.

One reason for leaving out such a vital component could have been to reduce the console's price, which will retail at £349 when it launches this November.

Sony announced the PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim as part of its PlayStation Meeting yesterday evening, confirming that both consoles will be launching this year.

PS4 Pro will launch for £349/$399 on November 10, 2016.

How many times do these companies decide what their potential customer base actually want, get it completely wrong and have to back-track before they stop making these stupid decisions and actually ask people?

Answer: there isn't a number big enough.

On the plus side there's a good chance that the BD player in the PS4 Pro could actually read UHD blurays, there are several PC players that could if not for the encryption. That would mean that the feature could be added in the future, although the additional licensing cost Sony would incur would make this unlikely.

Anyway if they'd included this functionality then I might have upgraded my PS4, but now there's no reason to. Well done Sony.

I'm wondering whether to get the XB1S now.

I don't stream anything.... So it's a waste of money for me.

I'm going with the Xbox One S which offers the capabilities of what my TV is capable of.
Not to mention also having the disc option instead of being tied down to everything digital.
