Overwatch shoots through major milestone

Overwatch has hit a major milestone within a month of its launch.

Blizzard's slick team-based shooter, Overwatch, made the headlines when it raced to 7 million players in only a week. Now the developer has confirmed that the game has hit a new milestone.

That's 10 million players since its 24 May launch on PS4, Xbox One and PC. Impressive.

Blizzard previously described Overwatch as "one of the most successful global launches of all time," and this latest figure would appear to confirm that.

It also sees the paid-game numbers exceeding the extraordinary 9.7 million players that played the free open beta prior to launch.

If you're not among the happy 10 million, Overwatch is a team-based multi-player shooter that features 21 varied heroes and 12 maps. In of each them players must work together to reach certain objectives – typically, capturing and holding points of escorting a slow-moving transport – using a roster of outrageously distinctive abilities.

The game currently supports only a handful of modes, with competitive and ranked options to be added in the coming months. We're also expecting to see new playable characters added to the roster.

Overwatch is already pretty great, though, and we awarded it a hefty 9/10 in our review.
