OnePlus 3 sequel rumoured: Is a OnePlus 3 Plus incoming?

The OnePlus 3 could be getting an unexpected sequel, according to a new report.

OnePlus is going to stop production of the OnePlus 3, and create a revamped followup that could be called the OnePlus 3S or OnePlus 3 Plus. That’s according to GizmoChina, which cites an unnamed supply chain source in a new report published today.

Apparently, OnePlus is struggling to get its hands on sufficient quantities of AMOLED displays, and is now considering scrapping the OnePlus 3 for a new version that uses LCD panels.

The new handset is also reportedly set to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 chip, a newer processor that’s 10% faster than its predecessor. This chip supports Google’s new Daydream VR virtual reality platform, too, and recently appeared inside the new Google Pixel smartphones.

Unfortunately, we can’t verify the information included in this new report, so take this latest leak with due caution. We’ve asked OnePlus for comment, and will update this article with any response.

The OnePlus 3 is the company’s fourth smartphone, and was revealed on 14 June this year. It features a Snapdragon 820 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 64GB of storage, as well as extras such as NFC and quick-charging, neither of which were included with the OnePlus 2.

The OnePlus 3 was notable for being the first OnePlus smartphone that wasn’t part of an invitation-only purchasing scheme, a system that was used for previous phones to regulate supply and demand.

We gave the OnePlus 3 a 4.5/5-star score in our review, praising its high-quality build, impressive heat-handling, excellent value, and solid camera.
