Nvidia has announced a new shipping date for its handheld gaming device, the Nvidia Shield.
Originally due to launch on June 27, the Nvidia Shield has been plagued with unspecified mechanical issues, but will now be available on July 31.
Last minute checks before the Nvidia Shield made its way onto the market uncovered a mechanical issue that Nvidia attributed to a “third-party” component. This meant the handheld gaming console missed its original shipping date and was pushed back to July.
Launching at a readjusted price of $299 (£196), the Nvidia Shield will ship to US consumers on July 31, but there’s still no word on a UK release date.
“Since then we have been working non-stop to put Shield through its paces and ensure it meets the highest quality control standards in the industry.”
Nvidia Shield Features
The handheld Nvidia powered games console is based on a traditional console controller with a flip-up 5-inch 1280 x 720p HD resolution multi-touch display.
It has a Nvidia Tegra 4 quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM and a 72-core Nvidia GeForce GPU. The Nvidia Shield features 16GB of internal flash storage which can be expanded via micro SD card.
Packing Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS connectivity, the Nvidia Shield also has mini-HDMI and micro USB 2.0 output.
The Nvidia handheld console has three inbuilt Axis Gyro and three Axis Accelerometer motion sensors to enhance the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean gaming experience.
Games to be palyed on the Nvidia Shield can be downloaded from the Google Play Store, Steam and the Nvidia TegraZone.
The Nvidia Shield can also play games streamed from a PC over a Wi-Fi connection, as long as the PC has a Nvidia GeForce GTX 650 GPU or better.
