Nokia 9: Everything we know so far

Nokia 9: Release date, price, specs and all the latest news

It’s looking like Nokia – under the wing of HMD Global – will take the wraps off the high-end Nokia 9 before the year’s out. Here’s everything we know about the handset, including its release date, specs, features and price, with an eye to the UK market.

The Nokia 9 is tipped to be a competitor to the OnePlus 5T, so it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise to hear that it won’t be equipped to rival the all-new Galaxy S9 – and that’s because it’s being targeted at a different market: those looking for an affordable yet high-end smartphone.

Samsung, on the other hand, is looking to push the envelope with the hope of marketing its next-generation flagship at customers prepared to pay north of £750 (≈$1000) for a smartphone. But that’s not to say the Nokia 9 will be a slouch in the performance department – it won’t.

Nokia 9 Latest News: Nokia’s next flagship could introduce an optical fingerprint reader

Digital outlet Nokia Power User has obtained information claiming that the Nokia 9 will feature a Snapdragon 845 CPU, a best-in-class camera design and a slew of other innovative features, making it a contendor for the “ultimate 2018 flagship,” according to a person familiar with the matter.

Nokia 9 Specs and Design: What does it look like and is it powerful?

The Nokia 9 is armed with a 5.5-inch OLED screen, a Snapdragon 835 CPU, 128GB of expandable internal storage, a dual rear-facing camera setup (13MP +12MP), a 5MP selfie shooter and a 3250mAh battery, according to a listing on the Federal Communication Commission’s database.

All of that is expected to be crammed into an elegant all-metal frame that’s sealed from dust and water, earning it a coveted IP68 waterproof rating – meaning it can be submerged into water up to 1.5 meters deep for a maximum of half an hour, as outlined in our IP67 vs IP68 comparison.

The hope is that the Nokia 9 will ship with Android 8.0 Oreo, which isn’t an unrealistic aspiration, seeing as Nokia ditched Windows Phone a long time ago and doesn’t skin its phones as heavily as some other manufacturers, making them easier to equip with Google’s latest software.

An alleged test model of the Nokia 9 was spotted in the wild by Indonesian blog detik on February 13, bearing a striking resemblance to all the leaks we’ve uncovered to date– with an edge-to-edge screen headlining the front and a dual-camera setup taking pride of place on the rear.

Nokia 9 Release Date and Price: When does it come out and how much will it cost?

It’s widely believed that the Nokia 9 will retail for around £415 (~$590) when it hits the shelves, though the source of that tidbit – MyDrivers – also said that the device would be made official on January 19. And that wasn’t the case, so consider the alleged pricing as a rough guide.

That’s about all we’ve heard about the Nokia 9 (from somewhat credible sources) to date. It doesn’t look like we’ll have to wait too much longer to find out what Nokia is planning, however, as it’s expected to unveil the handset at a dedicated event at MWC 2018 on February 26.

That means it’ll likely start hitting shelves, in the UK and other markets, sometime in March.
