Who will make the Nexus 6?

An LG executive has suggested that the despite having been behind the production of the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 smartphones, the company will not manufacturer the upcoming Nexus 6.

With Google set to host its annual Google I/O conference next week, new hardware announcements are reportedly on the horizon.

However, despite the Nexus smartphone not usually touching down until later in the year, LG has already seemingly ruled itself out of the running to manufacturer the next Google phone.

Speaking with Dutch site Draadbreuk, LG’s Communications Director Ken Hong has reportedly suggested that LG has yet to be approached by Google in regards to producing the Nexus 6.

“I know at least not yet. Normally we were informed,” Hong stated.

He added: “That can mean two things. Either I got ignored, or we simply won’t be making [the Nexus 6].”

While some would see this as something of a snub – especially given the widespread success of the Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 – Hong has claimed that producing the Nexus handset for Google isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

If you can develop a Google phone that gives credibility, but money you earn is not easy and you become too dependent on Google,” Hong is quoted as saying.

The LG exec was also keen to stress that the stock shortages which surrounded the arrival of the past two Nexus handsets were not LG’s fault, by an issue based in Google’s need to control all elements of the partnership.

He stated: “Google determines how many phones are to be made, and we do that.

“If it is stated that LG produces too few Nexus phones, the media then is simply incorrect. We get asked, we deliver.”

Although much mystery still surrounds the expected device, recent Nexus 6 rumours have claimed Google could ditch the Nexus branding, instead launching a new line of ‘Project Silver’ dubbed devices.
