HTC may have given up on smaller phones

HTC has suggested that it might be ready to give up on its Mini range, claiming that there's no market for smaller phones.

The Taiwanese manufacturer typically follows up the launch of its flagship phones with a smaller, externally similar Mini variant. The last example of this was last year's HTC One Mini 2.

However, following the launch of the HTC One M9, quotes attributed to president of HTC North Asia Jack Tong appear to suggest that there will be no HTC One M9 Mini.

"Overall the industry is moving towards new phones over 5 inches in size and our product roadmap is close to that of the industry," said Tong, speaking at the Taiwan launch of the larger and higher specced HTC One M9+.

Focus Taiwan, which provided these quotes, has interpreted these quotes as meaning that HTC has no plans to launch a smaller version of the HTC One M9.

Since the original report, HTC has clarified this quote to Phone Scoop. Tong "did not say HTC is not planning any more mini versions of its phones," according to HTC spokesperson Jeff Gordon.

However, Gordan went on to add the following caveat: "To be clear, I'm not confirming HTC is coming out with an HTC One M9 mini," he said.

So, while HTC hasn't discounted producing another Mini device in the future, it doesn't seem inclined to do so given current market conditions.

I hate this decision...

Not everyone wants to carry around a huge phone.

Not a good decision. A lot of people prefer sub 5 inch phones. I think that is part of the reason why Apple is so successful. Sounds more like cost cutting to me. Take away those front facing (and space hogging) speakers, stick one on the bottom, reduce the bezel, and voila...a 4.75 inch phone. And get rid of the crappy "mini" branding. People aren't stupid (mostly) they know it means inferior.
