Apple orders record iPhone 6S numbers

Apple is apparently banking on massive success with its next phone by placing a record order for iPhone 6S handsets.

The iPhone 6S is expected to launch in September, and Apple evidently reckons it’s going to be the most popular iPhone yet.

A new Wall Street Journal report claims that Apple has placed an order for between 85 million and 90 million iPhone 6S handsets with its suppliers. That’s the largest smartphone order the company has ever place.

The order includes both of the new models that are expected in September. That means follow-ups to both the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus.

It should also be noted that the order is set to be completed by December 31. This evidently means that this monster batch is intended to cover the initial launch period rather than to be ready in time for release day.

So how does this compare to Apple’s previous initial production numbers? Well, last year the company ordered between 70 million and 80 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus handsets.

That sizeable order was more than taken up, as Apple sold a staggering 135.6 million iPhones between September 2014 and March 2015.

Can Apple really match or even exceed such a take-up with the iPhone 6S, which is expected to look very similar to the iPhone 6? Given the way that most smartphone contracts still operate, on a two year contract, we’d be surprised if it didn’t.
