LG Store to launch for UK webOS TVs next week
LG’s new webOS TVs are to get even better in the coming days, with the launch of the LG Store bringing a raft of downloadable apps to the platform.
With the first webOS TVs having hit UK retailers in recent weeks, early adopters have been left wanting when it comes to additional, downloadable content.
Now, however, the Korean manufacturer has confirmed the LG Store will hit UK webOS TVs within a matter of days. The feature is already available in the US.
“
Despite confirming the content store is just days from hitting UK sets, Petersen was unable to offer an exact date for launch.
As well as letting webOS TV owners to fill their sets with all manner of services and games, the LG Store will also offer ‘Premium’ content providers to better enhance users’ Smart TV experiences.
“We have a Premium Store. The Premium apps are very select, premium content partners and names you will probably recognise so the likes of Netflix, Amazon, Skype,” Jim Saraco, the Product Lead on LG’s webOS team told us at the company’s Silicon Valley Lab.
Peterson added: “This will be very similar to last year’s Premium selection of applications on LG devices. We will have about 20 Premium applications in the UK, additional to what you will find on the launcher.
“The launcher is pre-installed applications but if the user wants to download BlinkBox or BBC Sport for instance and pull that through, they have the freedom to do that.”
webOS is LG’s new Smart TV platform and a major step forward in the connected TV space.
Built from the ground up around HP’s webOS smartphone and tablet platform of old, the new TV system will run on around 70 per cent of the Korean manufacturer’s 2014 TV line in the UK.
Discussing how it is looking to bolster its webOS app pool, the LG spokespeople stated: “We work very closely with what you would say are the strategic partners in the UK and globally and we have an open SDK so that developers can create apps that will then go through a QA process.”
