LG G Pad 2 10.1 tablet announced

LG has announced a follow-up to last year’s affordable LG G Pad 10.1 tablet, with a bunch of notable improvements.

Last year’s cheap full-sized tablet from LG wasn’t particularly great. Sluggish performance, a low res screen, and cheap design conspired to scupper the LG G Pad 10.1’s chances in a tough market.

Now, however, LG is back with the new and improved (if messily named) LG G Pad 2 10.1, and it appears to address all three of those aforementioned criticisms.

The 10.1-inch display is sharper this year – up to 1920 x 1200 from the original G Pad’s 1280 x 800. The processor is quicker too, though its 2.26GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 (the original had a Snapdragon 400) would only have been considered state-of-the-art two years ago.

As for the design, LG has slimmed the LG G Pad 2 10.1’s bezels down significantly. In fact, it reckons that it’s “the slimmest bezel among similar-sized tablets currently on the market.”

It’s trimmed the fat in other ways too. The G Pad 2 drops from 8.9mm to 7.8mm thick, and weighs 489g compared to the original’s 523g.

Somewhat oddly, while LG boasts of responding to customer feedback for a bigger battery, the G Pad 2 10.1’s 7,400mAh example is actually smaller than the original’s 8,000mAh battery.

The camera will be a fairly modest 5-megapixel example, but we don’t mind about that so much in a full-size tablet, do we?

LG will fully unveil the LG G Pad 2 10.1 at IFA 2015 from September 4, where price and availability details should be forthcoming.
