iPhone 5C to have 8-megapixel iPhone 5 camera

The forthcoming budget iPhone, now being referred to as the iPhone 5C, could well come with the same 8-megapixel camera as the current iPhone 5.

Chinese website IT168 has posted  pictures of components (see below) for the forthcoming iPhone 5C camera unit. It’s claimed that this camera is identical to the iPhone 5 equivalent, other than a plastic casing.

Many had expected a 5-megapixel camera unit for the iPhone 5C, as is the norm for so-called entry-level smartphones from other leading manufacturers. The fact that an 8-megapixel sensor will be used proves that there’s really no such thing as a ‘budget’ iPhone, and that we can expect to pay mid-range prices for the all-plastic phone.

Indeed, it’s being claimed that the iPhone 5C will cost around $350, which would probably translate to around £250 if true.

This would still be significantly cheaper than a brand new iPhone 4, which Apple still sells as its entry-level device. The three-year-old smartphone still costs £319 / $450 unlocked and contract free.

With the iPhone 5S possibly set to receive an improved 13-megapixel camera and dual LED flashes, Apple’s forthcoming revamped iPhone range could be quite formidable in the camera department.

We’re expecting to see both the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 5C together at a launch event in September. Both will ship with iOS 7, Apple’s bold new mobile operating system overhaul.
