How do I turn on Dark Mode in iOS 13?

First, head to ‘Settings‘ and then look for ‘Display & Brightness‘. Once there you’ll see an all-new user interface which places dark mode front and centre.

You can toggle between ‘Light‘ and ‘Dark‘ mode with just a tap, assuming you want to activate it manually, however, its implementation within iOS is a little smarter than either ‘on’ or ‘off’.

Beneath the two main options, you’ll also see a toggle marked ‘Automatic‘ which as you might be able to guess, switches dark mode on by itself, tied to sunset and sunrise. You also then have the option to define specific times for dark mode to enable and disable.

Dark mode has proven to be one of the most hyped features coming to mobile devices in 2019. It isn’t just an ability destined for iOS 13 either, it’s a big feature in Android 10 and some devices have already instigated their own take on dark mode – phones like the Asus ZenFone 6 and the OnePlus 7 Pro.

What does Dark Mode in iOS 13 do?

Part of dark mode’s appeal comes from the reduction in power consumption it brings, particularly on devices that use OLED displays, such as the iPhone X, XS and XS Max.

Beyond power consumption, however, darker interface tones also help reduce eye strain, especially when being viewed in dark surroundings.

In select cases, alternative UI and font colours have also been linked to alleviating conditions like Scotopic Sensitivity Syndrome – an affliction commonly found in those with dyslexia that makes text visibility and comprehension difficult.

Despite the known number of benefits that dark mode brings as a feature, it’s hard to understand why users are so pumped to get their hands on this long-touted addition to iOS. Apple already introduced dark mode as part of last year’s macOS Mojave, so in a sense, its move to mobile is long overdue.
