Google working on cross-platform AirDrop rival

Google is said to be working on a local file-sharing service called Copresence, which could rival Apple’s AirDrop for functionality.

Several sources have discovered references to a service called “Copresence” in Google code of late.

One tipster discovered a bunch of code and even artwork that relates to Copresence hidden within the latest version of the Google Play Services APK, then shared their findings with Android Police.

The service appears aimed at letting users share files, directions, photos, and the like between two smartphones or tablets.

Note that we didn’t say Android smartphones or tablets there. Yep, Copresence appears to be a cross-platform initiative, as evidenced by the artwork, which depicts a number of difference smart devices working in beautiful harmony. Ahhh.

Elsewhere, mention of Copresence has been discovered in Google’s Chrome desktop web browser, which suggests that the service could allow the seamless local sharing of information between all of your devices, including your computer.

Could the latter point mean that Copresence will have an element of Apple’s Continuity feature, which enables the seamless sharing of app states across iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite devices? We’re not sure at this point.

In fact, there are no specifics as to how Copresence will work just yet, but it’s suggested that the new service could be ready to roll out in the coming weeks.
