Google: Lollipop update to be fastest Android rollout yet

Android 5.0 Lollipop is Google’s latest mobile operating system, which means Apple-shunners worldwide are desperate to get it on their blowers.

Fortunately for the eager Android lot, Google promises that Lollipop will land on smartphones and tablets faster than ever.

Dave Burke, VP of Engineering for Android and Nexus, told ArsTechnica that Google’s new early-sharing strategy would speed the launch process up significantly.

I think what you’ll see this time around is more devices on L quicker than any release before, because they’ve had more time,” said Burke.

Lollipop signalled a different approach for Google’s mobile OS – the search engine giant showed off the new software well in advance of the actual release date.

The big G also released developer previews for the Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 early on, giving any willing devs a chance to sort out code before launch day.

Brian Rakowski, Google’s VP of Product Management, said: “At I/O, I think we said we had 5000 new APIs. That should have been how many APIs there were, but now there are 7000 .”

“So our eyes were bigger than our stomachs somewhat and we kept adding stuff.”

It was especially important that developers had several months to test their apps on Android 5.0, as software had to be redesigned to suit Google’s new ‘material design’ aesthetic.

It also gave OEMs like Samsung and Sony a head-start on developing their Android skins, to help them push out the new release to their customers as quickly as possible.
